Low output MC (Moving Coil) cartridges generate an output that's approximately one-tenth the output of MM (Moving Magnet) cartridges. This necessitates the use of a specialized phono preamp with more gain and different electrical parameters, unless a step-up transformer is employed to prepare the signal for a standard MM phono stage.

The MC Step-Up Box S3 operates quite differently from a conventional phono preamplifier. The transformer's winding ratio determines the gain factor. As a passive device that requires no power supply, it cannot generate additional power. Instead, the increase in voltage is achieved through a corresponding decrease in current. Without amplification, the MC Step-Up Box S3 exhibits remarkably low noise and distortion, delivering a lively, dynamic, and natural sonic signature.

Why Use a Step-Up Transformer?

In the past, step-up transformers were a virtual necessity for optimally handling the low-output signal of MC cartridges. Active amplification technology was excessively noisy at the time, defeating the purpose of the low-output design. A step-up transformer removes active amplification from the equation and passively boosts the signal in the traditional manner. Operating independently of mains power, it provides 21 or 24dB of gain, effectively matching the output level of MM cartridges (which is why the step-up transformer's output connects to an MM phono preamp input).

While modern active amplification has improved significantly, reducing noise levels, a niche of critical listeners continue to favor the performance of step-up transformers. It is a different approach that, depending on your low-output cartridge and MM preamp, may be precisely what you're seeking.
